Boat Wrap Decals Buyer's Guide: Sizes, Marine Vinyl, Hull Prep, and Prices
By Decal Scout editorial · Published · Updated
A printed boat wrap decal is a marine-grade vinyl panel applied to the hull side above the waterline; Stickalz sells them in three sizes, 5x30 inches at $79.99, 10x60 at $159.99, and 10x130 at $299.99, in fishing, ocean, and abstract designs. The right size depends on your hull: a 5x30 strip suits a jon boat, kayak, or jet ski, while the 10x130 panel runs most of the side of a 16- to 20-foot bass or bay boat. Gelcoat must be de-waxed with alcohol or the decal will not stick.
Sizes explained, and what fits which boat
Boat panels in the feed come in three listed sizes. The 5x30 at $79.99 is a stripe-sized strip: a good fit for a jet ski, a canoe or kayak, a 10 to 12-foot jon boat, or a single accent band on a larger hull. The 10x60 at $159.99 covers the forward or aft half of a small aluminum or fiberglass runabout. The 10x130 at $299.99 is a 10-foot-10-inch panel that runs most of the topside of a 16 to 20-foot bass, bay, or center-console hull in one piece. Prices are per side; plan on two panels for a symmetrical look.

Fishing and wildlife designs
Bass, marlin, and shark artwork are the most-searched boat decal styles, and the feed has all three: Sunset Bass Fishing and Vibrant Bass Splash for freshwater rigs, Blue Marlin Ocean for offshore boats, and Predator Shark and Great White Shark graphics for anyone who wants teeth at the bow. The Sea Turtle Reef, Coral Garden, and Coral Depths designs are the underwater-scene alternative and are available up to the 10x130 size.

Abstract, wave, and racing designs
If you want a factory-graphics look rather than a picture, the wave and gradient panels are the ones to consider: Ocean Wave, Blue Wave Marine, Ocean Line Flow, Chrome Ocean Motion, Metallic Wave Fusion, and Golden Tide. The Red Velocity and Solar Motion panels are racing-stripe style for performance boats. Camo is covered by the Aqua Camo and Blue Camo marine patterns, which hide dock rash as well as they hide anything else.

Marine vinyl and what 'marine grade' should mean
Boat decals live a harder life than car decals: constant UV reflected off the water, salt, fuel at the fill, and fenders rubbing the same spot all season. Marine-grade film should be a cast vinyl with a UV-resistant laminate and an adhesive rated for gelcoat and aluminum. Stickalz titles describe the boat panels as marine-grade but do not publish the film manufacturer or thickness, so ask if you are wrapping a saltwater boat that stays in the water. Above the waterline, a quality printed panel lasts two to five seasons; at or below the waterline, no printed vinyl is a long-term solution, and antifouling paint belongs there instead.

Hull prep and installation
- Wash with boat soap, then strip wax and silicone with isopropyl alcohol. Gelcoat is almost always waxed; this is the step that fails most boat decals.
- Oxidized, chalky gelcoat must be compounded and polished first, then de-waxed again. Vinyl will not hold on chalk.
- On aluminum, remove any flaking paint and wipe with alcohol; bare aluminum takes vinyl well once clean.
- Apply with the hull between 60 and 80°F, out of wind, with the boat on the trailer at a comfortable working height.
- Use the wet method with a few drops of soap in water for these large panels; squeegee firmly from the center out to drive the water out.
- Post-heat all edges to 180-200°F and press them down. The bow edge takes the most water pressure under way.
- Wait 48 to 72 hours before launching.

Registration numbers and legal placement
Most states require registration numbers on the forward half of each side of the hull in block letters at least 3 inches high, contrasting with the background. A busy graphic under the numbers is allowed in most places but makes them hard to read; the usual fix is to place the printed panel aft of the numbers, or to apply the numbers on a plain contrasting block over the graphic. Check your state's boating agency before final placement.

FAQ
Can I put a vinyl wrap below the waterline?
It is not recommended. Constant immersion and antifouling needs make printed vinyl a short-lived choice there. Keep graphics above the waterline and use bottom paint below it.
Will a boat decal stick to old gelcoat?
Only after compounding off the oxidation and de-waxing with alcohol. Chalky gelcoat must be polished to a clean, hard surface first.
Is the 10x130 panel one piece?
It is listed as a single 10-by-130-inch panel. Plan for two people to install it, and use the wet method so it can be repositioned.
